The Langara College Library building is a key component in the sustainable campus master plan, as developed by Teeple Architects Inc. The concept is to create a campus composed of interdependent indoor and outdoor learning centres.
The building is situated to accommodate three new courtyards which are a focal point for campus life. By eliminating traditional HVAC systems and replacing them with geothermal heating and cooling in combination with the natural displacement ventilation, the electrical load in the building is significantly reduced. Weather sensing controls, connected to a computer based control system, activate operable windows which aid in the natural flow of ventilation throughout the building.
